“Did you hear what she said? Did you? She said that you’re cute. She actually said the word ‘cute,’ ” says Linc. He sits on my bed, then stands up and then sits back down. “I don’t believe it.”

From the spot where I stand changing out of my milk-soaked shirt, I reach for a pillow from my bed and throw it at Linc. It actually hits the mark and knocks the baseball hat off his head.

“Why’d you do that?”

“To shut you up, that’s why.” I groan. “Those cookies were so good, I ate too many.” I actually think about unbuttoning my jeans like my dad sometimes does after dinner.

“And you want to shut me up why? Becca said you were cute. Becca. The girl you have a crush on. I’m just repeating what she said. Isn’t this a good thing? Don’t you want her to think you’re cute?”

“She said it was cute that I have a lucky pen. That’s different than saying that I’m cute. And even if it isn’t, it was more cute like a puppy is cute than cute like a guy you’d want to hang out with.”

Because it was like that, wasn’t it? She didn’t really mean that she thinks I’m cute. She couldn’t think that. Could she?

“She said ‘cute,’” says Linc. “And now it’s up to you to woo. Come on, Gabe, woo already.”

“I’m not going to woo. And seriously, you’ve got to stop reading your mom’s books. It’s not good.”

“I’m writing a love poem for Rachel. I’m taking action. Girls like guys who take action.” Linc flops backward on my bed and stares at a spot on the ceiling. “This poem I’m writing for Rachel is going to work. Trust me. I’m right about this. Action.”

“Are you sure you want to do this?” I say. “I kind of have a bad feeling about it.” Which isn’t exactly the truth. I don’t kind of have a bad feeling. I positively have a terrible feeling. But the smile on his face says Linc doesn’t even hear me.
